§ 8 6 5 4 3 |
West leads the §K and East shows out. South wins with the Ace of clubs and sets about trying to get a count of the hand. He knows that West started with 6 clubs and must discover how many cards of the other suits each player held originally. Two rounds of diamonds and three rounds of hearts show that West started with singleton diamond and a doubleton heart and must therefore have had four spades. South has to count very carefully what is discarded by West. If West discards a spade then South can cash all his winners and give the defenders the last trick to make his contract. If West discards only clubs on the third round of diamonds and the fourth round of hearts then he has only the Queen of clubs left so South can throw West in with clubs and force him to give away a club trick on which is discarded a losing spade.
